Superfly 1 | 3" x 5" Original Painting

Inspiration can strike at the most unusual of times, and in surprising ways... The Superfly series of paintings was inspired by the bold colors and rough animation of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and take their namesake from the movie's brand new villain. Movie critique's aside, I grew up with the Turtles, and appreciated the nostalgia of the characters, the voice-acting cast, and the soundtrack filled with 90's greats. It doesn't hurt that the Turtles are all named for famous Italian Renaissance painters.

Method:

This series started off as a watercolor painting on paper. Because I used less water than normal, it presents almost as acrylic. I cut the original painting into 10 pieces and mounted them to small cradled boards so that I could finish them with a coat of encaustic medium. (A take on Turtle Wax, if you will...)

Dimensions and Care:

This painting measures 3" x 5" and is 1.5" deep. It has a sawtooth for hanging on a simple nail, and it can also be displayed on a shelf or table. Do not display in direct sunlight or store in a non-conditioned space. The wax will continue to cure for upwards of a year. When it becomes cloudy, you can gently buff with a t-shirt to restore the shine.

Encaustic FAQs

Important shipping notes:

Encaustic is sensitive to temperature extremes, so shipping is sometimes delayed to Monday or Tuesday in order to avoid your art sitting on a truck over a weekend or holiday.

If your painting was subjected to temperature extremes during shipping, it's best to allow your package to acclimate to a temperature-controlled environment for 12-24 hours before opening. This minimizes the potential for damage during handling.

Where to hang your art:

Hot temperatures can cause the wax to soften, and cold temperatures can cause it to become brittle and more prone to chipping.

UV rays can fade certain pigments, and direct sunlight often causes excessive heat, which can soften your painting.

Tips to maintain encaustic paintings:

For the first 1-2 years, the wax in your painting will continue to bloom. Buff using a clean lint-free cloth (like a t-shirt), or even the palm of your hand (remove jewelry first!)

Sometimes the structure of the painting can't withstand buffing. In these cases, it's best to skip buffing the delicate areas.
